KSN Meteorologist Leon Smitherman is familiar to KSN viewers, having worked for more than a year as a reporter for KSN News. In that role, Leon used his considerable meteorological background to contribute a unique perspective to many weather and science related stories.
But, Leon is also no stranger to forecasting and covering severe weather! He holds the TV Seals of Approval from both the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association, and a Certificate in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University. He has worked in broadcast meteorology since 1990, including time in Spokane, WA; San Diego, CA; and Raleigh, NC.
Leon knows what it's like to cover big storms. He covered Hurricanes Floyd and Dennis while Chief Meteorologist for WRAZ-TV, the Fox affiliate in Raleigh, NC.
Leon is our Meteorologist during KSN News at Noon. You can also see him anchoring live from the field during KSN News at 5:00pm.
Leon's family is from Butler County, so returning to Kansas has brought him back home. Leon is married and has one child.
