Indian Fry Bread, Corn Soup and Wojapa

Today's recipe comes from the kitchen of Our Catrina Red Willow of the Oglala Sioux/Lakota Tribe

Indian Fry Bread

2 -Cups flour
2 -Teaspoons baking powder
½- Teaspoon salt
4 -Tablespoons shortening (optional)
¾ -Cups milk or warm water, to desired consistency.

Sift dry ingredients, cut in shortening. Add liquid to mixture and blend. Roll out on floured surface. Cut into 3 inch strips or as desired, slash each center. Fry in deep fat until golden brown and turn. Drain on absorbent towel or brown bag.


Corn Soup

3 -Pounds Beef Jerky or beef stew meat
1-Cup dried corn (Cope’s brand)
½- Teaspoon Salt or beef base (to taste)
Dash Pepper
Diced Onion (optional)
Small pieces of Salt pork for flavor (optional)

Cover meat and dry corn with water. Add salt & pepper, onion and salt pork. Cook until tender.


Wojapi (Fruit Pudding)

1-16 ounce package of frozen berries of choice 1 1/2 -- Tablespoons flour or corn starch
3 t o 6- Cups water
Sugar to taste.
1 Tablespoon of tallow or butter. (optional)

Bring berries to a good rolling boil with sugar to taste. Add flour or corn starch to help thicken it. Serve with Fry Bread.
