Whole Grain Jam Squares

This recipe won Paula Webb a blue ribbon at the Kansas State Fair a couple of year's ago. People still beg her to prepare it.

Ingredients:
2 cups oatmeal
l cup all purpose flour
3/4 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup butter or margarine
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp soda
3/4-1 cup jam jelly or preserves
1/2 cup sunflower seeds or nuts of your choice may be added

Directions:

  • Combine oatmeal, flours, margarine or butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, soda and nuts if desired.
  • Beat at low speed until mixture is crumbly.
  • Reserve 2 cups mixture, Press remaining mixture onto bottom of a greased 9x13 inch pan.
  • Spread jam, jelly or preserves over base and sprinkle with reserved mixture.
  • Bake in a 400 over 25 minutes.
  • Cool and cut into squares.

Makes 1 9x13 inch pan.
