GOBBLER’S KNOB, Pennsylvania (NBC) -- Punxsutawney Phil has predicted six more weeks of winter.

The world famous groundhog made his annual prediction in front of nearly 20,000 people this morning at Gobbler's Knob in central Pennsylvania.

Phil has seen his shadow 99 times since 1886, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club's Inner Circle, which runs the event.

Regardless of his prediction, many people feel like winter has not even started with mild temperatures in most states.

The Groundhog Day celebration started with a German superstition that believes if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on February 2nd, the Christian holiday of Candlemas, winter will last another six weeks.

If it doesn't see its shadow, spring will come early.
