More than 100 animals die in shelter fire

TEMPLE, Texas (NBC) -- A Central Texas animal shelter loses 140 dogs and cats after an early morning fire at an animal shelter in Killeen.

Volunteers spent the weekend cleaning up debris at the Cen-Tex Humane Society Animal Shelter in Killeen.

The shelter believes an electrical shortage is to blame for the fire that started around one Sunday morning.

A number of empty cages are now grim reminders of the found 99 cats and 15 dogs found dead.

They died of smoke inhalation after the early morning fire ripped through this kitchen.

The shelter collecting donations to help the animals this fire.

The shelter is accepting donations right now.

It won’t be taking in animals for the next few days.
