HAYS, Kansas – New flights to Denver will soon be taking off from the Hays Airport.

Earlier this year the city commission agreed to end flights from Hays to Kansas City in favor of adding more Denver flights.

Great Lakes Aviation has announced the new flight schedule, which will include four daily outbound trips to the Mile High City. There will be an early, mid-morning and two afternoon flights offered on weekdays. On weekends there will be a morning, mid-day and one afternoon flight available.

The changes will begin August 1st.

In the wake of Great Lakes changing its flights at the Hays Airport the Great Bend Airport will be losing some flights. The route changes mean Great Lakes will no longer offer flights from Great Bend to Denver as of August 1st. It will continue service to Kansas City as required by an Essential Air Service contract.

“What we're looking at is basically two flights a day, which is the minimum required by the federal government to Kansas City and one a day on Saturday and Sunday, said Martin Miller, Great Bend Airport manager. “So this is what the contract allowed for.”

The U.S. Department of Transportation is currently looking at prospective carriers to provide flights to Denver from Great Bend with a two-year contract that would start in October. Air carriers including Great Lakes will also be bidding on the next air service contracts for Kansas City flights.
