GARDEN CITY, Kansas – Tuesday night, Garden City officials met with residents to discuss a new program aimed at improving each individual neighborhood.

Resident John Hogg wants to make his neighborhood a better place, so he’s signed up with the new Neighborhood Improvement Project, which is a partnership with the police department.

“I think it's a great program,” Hogg said. “I think any time you get the community involved in self policing, helping to improve the community, it's the people in the community that are going to make it better.”

Each neighborhood is going to focus on an issue that affects them the most. For example, if they have a huge gang problem, then that's one of the projects they will be working on.

Residents will be taught how to spot suspicious activity and keep a log of what they see and report it to authorities.

The hope the effort will deter crime and help neighborhood relations. The goal is to improve every neighborhood, making Garden City one of the nicest places to live in the state.

“It's not only going to help each individual neighborhood, it will help with recruiting businesses into the community, will help with property values, increasing the safety of the citizens,” said MPO Clint Brock with the Garden City Police Department.

Several students are also participating, helping to develop future leaders in the community. Officials say other areas have seen significant improvements after participating in the NIP. They hope it does the same for Garden City.
