HOISINGTON, Kansas – Hoisington city leaders broke ground on a new pharmacy Thursday.

After three year of working to bring the pharmacy to town, the community is singing praises.

“It's an outstanding opportunity for Hoisington,” said City Manager Jonathon Mitchell. “We're really excited about the growth, the development opportunities that new pharmacy brings.”

And Russell Pharmacist Marla Mooney is looking forward to the challenge of operating her own business in Hoisington.

“Business ownership was not exactly on my agenda, however, it's just something that I feel like it’s meant to be, and you know we are here for a reason,” Mooney said.

Residents say after three years without a pharmacy, they’ve realized how much one is needed.

Last year, KSN met Tom Van Brimmer, who back then was taking 16 medications for various conditions, including asthma, emphysema and fibromyalgia. Now he’s taking around 25 medicines and couldn’t be happier to have a pharmacy coming to his hometown.

“It’s an inconvenience to have to go to Great Bend -- not that I don't love my pharmacist over there, but it's an inconvenience, expensive, time-consuming and everything else,” he said. “So I'm really looking forward to them being here.”

The Cardinal Pharmacy will be built on a lot across from the
Clara Barton Hospital. The city’s financing the bulk of more than $300,000 construction price tag, but folks like Van Brimmer say it’s well worth the cost.

Construction is set to begin at the site next month and Cardinal Pharmacy will be open for business in the spring.

Mooney is seeking community input on what medications she’ll need to keep in stock both prescription and over the counter. Those suggestions can be directed to City Manager Jonathon Mitchell by calling 653-4125.
