LYONS, KansasA new housing development will soon be under construction in Rice County.

A row of gold shovels lifted dirt at the future home of a new senior living complex in Lyons Monday. Country Place Living will be located in the 500 block of S. Miles Ave. It will include 18 apartments and is being modeled after a housing complex owned by the same company in Hoisington. In fact, it will be the seventh Country Place Living facility in Kansas.

“Staff is on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, offering a variety of services to our residents,” said Jack West, founder and CEO of Country Place Living. “The structure and all the other development costs will be in excess of $2 million. So it's a significant investment in the community.”

Leaders are thrilled to be getting the senior apartments in the community as the aging population in Rice County is growing.

“We do have a lot of elderly people here, and they need places like this,” said Lyons Mayor Jim Cowan. “A lot of them can't stay in their homes anymore because they're not able to take care of them.  And sometimes they have to move out of town to stay with their kids.  Now with something like this maybe they can stay here.”

The first phase of construction is expected to start this week. The development of the new Country Place Living apartments will also bring some infrastructure improvements.

The assisted living facility will create 15 to 20 news jobs in the community and is expected to open in late spring.
