GREAT BEND, Kansas – A brand new medical center is set to open in Great Bend. Great Bend Regional Hospital, formerly known as the Surgical and Diagnostic Center, welcomed the public for the first time this week.

The hospital took more than a year and some $15 million to construct and soon it will begin treating patients. A group of physicians wanted to create the hospital as an alternative source of health care in
Central Kansas.

“To be able to keep up with the hospitals, our competitors in the surrounding communities, we needed some new facilities,” said Dr. Roger Marshal with GBRH. “And number two, we needed a focus where nurses and physicians drove healthcare.”

In the main entrance is a large open lobby and check-in desk. Just up the hall are the patient rooms – all are private and include their own bathrooms. There are even pediatric suites just for kids. There’s also a full service kitchen and dining hall.

“This is a great facility,” said visitor Joe Boley. “Of course it's brand new, clean, modern, decorated real nice -- just a very nice facility.”

The maternity suites include a fold out sofa for family members who stay with the new mom. And each suite includes a Jacuzzi bath tub. There’s also added space for surgeries and a new laboratory.

But possibly one of the most impressive features of the facility is its nurse to patient ratio. For every four people that are staying at the hospital, one nurse takes care of them.

“We are ready to handle anything from a rash to cardiac trauma, stroke -- whatever we can do to help this community,” said Teri Thomas with GBRH.

The Great Bend Regional Hospital will start seeing patients on July 7th.
