SALINA, Kansas – A late night fire in a Salina neighborhood destroyed half of a home and damaged two others. But thanks to working smoke alarms, everyone got out safely.

A Salina family of eight says they're lucky to be alive after fire broke out in this home last night while they were all asleep.

The fire started at around 11:40 Wednesday night and when firefighter arrived, they found the garage fully engulfed.

“They made entry to the front of the house, which was not damaged by the fire, put the fire out in a couple of rooms backed there, saved the house,” Said Jeff Daily, Salina fire prevention officer.

It took firefighters an hour to put out the blaze, which destroyed the back of the home, the garage and two vehicles.

"It was basically used as a work area and for storage,” Daily said. “A lot of personal items, some lawn-mowers that actually helped fuel the fire."

The intense heat of the fire also damaged two neighboring homes. The family says they heard a smoke alarm go off and evacuated the house.

"We're sad because we don't have a house anymore,” said homeowner Richard Soto. “We're going to live with family until we get this taken care of. Till the insurance kicks in and fixes the house.”

Investigators say they know where the fire started in the garage, but have not determined the cause. Damages have not yet been estimated.
