LYONS, Kansas – Drivers will soon have to slow down a bit on a major stretch of highway in Rice County.

The Kansas Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Traffic Engineering and Design has now approved reducing the speed limit from 40 to 35 miles per hour on US Highway 56 through Lyons.

The slower speed limit affects the section of highway between the emergency services complex and Pioneer Rd.

The Lyons City Council had requested the change back in May.

“We've had a lot of congestion,” said John Sweet, city administrator. “We've had traffic accidents, and a lot of customer, consumer requests to get that reduced as well. So I'm glad K-DOT did a study and came back positive.”

KDOT has also approved a reduction in speed on K-96/K-14, which is south of Grand through Lyons. That speed limit will also be dropped from 40 to 35 mph. New speed limit signs should be posted within two weeks.
