SALINA, Kansas – Salina police are investigating two separate thefts of payphones where the machines may have been tied up and pulled from their foundation by a vehicle.

The payphones were stolen between October 30th and November 1st from outside the Green Lantern on Broadway and outside a gas station on N. 9th St.

Police say marks on the pavement were consistent with removal by chains connected to a vehicle.

“The sad part about this whole thing is each theft of the phone is a felony because they're worth a thousand dollars,” said Deputy Chief Carson Mansfield with the Salina Police Department. “They usually only contain 25 dollars or so in change."

An ATM was stolen from a Salina convenience store in the same fashion two weeks ago. But police say they have no reason to believe the payphone thefts were committed by the same suspects who stole the ATM.
