GREAT BEND, Kansas – A hunting ban is now in effect at the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge because whooping cranes have been spotted there.

Whooping cranes are an endangered species and hunting is prohibited until they leave.

Two birds were killed in Stafford County in 2005 by hunters who thought they were sand hill cranes.

Eighteen whooping cranes have also been spotted at Cheyenne Bottoms in Barton County but hunting is not being restricted there.
