SALINA, Kansas – The Salina Fire Department was busy Sunday afternoon fighting a blaze that caused major structural damage to a home in the 1400 block of Pawnee.

When firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke and flames pouring out of the garage and attic areas. It took crews about 20 minutes to contain the fire.

No one was home at the time.

The fire department says the cause of the fire was a wood-burning stove that was being used to heat the home.

"This stove had been altered to fit into this house and it wasn't done like it should be, up to code,” said Troy Long, fire inspector for the Salina Fire Department. “That's the biggest, most important thing is that we follow all the codes."

Investigators estimate the structural loss at $41,000 and a $15,000 loss in contents. The entire home is uninhabitable due to fire and smoke damage.
