The best thing to happen for the gay rights movement... was Anita Bryant! She gave the movement...MOVEMENT! I was a Chicago transplant to San Francisco in the early 60's, because being gay was considered TABOO. at home, at school and the work place. I arrived in S.F. at the tail-end of the beatnik era, and that was followed by the hippies, flower children, the "Summer of Love" in '67 and the war protesters and peace mongers and among all those groups were pockets of gays. I moved between the Haight-Ashbury and a sleepy changing neighborhood called the Castro... to start the 1970's. I was a freelance photographer and publicist that specialized in gay clients and businesses at a time it was not yet fashionable to be openly gay, even in San Francisco! I displayed my photos in a Castro St. bakery just steps away from today's Harvey Milk Plaza. I used to have my film developed at Harvey's camera shop. We became friends. By osmosis, I became involved in early gay politics and sports. Early in 1977... Anita Bryant began her assault on gays, in Dade County Florida by trying to get a gay rights ordinance overturned. In May, I became a footnote to gay history when I created the "ANITA BRYANT'S HUSBAND IS A HOMO-SAPIEN!" T-shirt and outed myself via UPI wire photos.A couple of weeks later, I was able to get Jane Fonda to wear one at a gay fundraiser. On June 7,77 my photo of Harvey at an impromptu march resulting from Bryant's victory introduced Harvey as "the"spokesman against her, 5 months before he was elected as the counties first openly male politician via the Associated Press. The results of Wichita came 9 months later. There were mistakes in the movie, but the most important fact is that it introduced Harvey and that era to millions , young and old,gay and straight, here in the USA and around the world. I recommend jerrypritikin.blogspot.com and www.thecastro.net/street/memoriespage/pritikin/pritikin.html it's the real events and not a recreation like the m

Thank you for being willing to open up communication on the subject of the GLBT community. Many people don't realize that those on the coast may be leading the charge, but many feel Wichita KS has the potential to be major player in the struggle for equaility. Thank you

I loved how you used my Mother N laws clip in your story. Lol! I had to take a pic of the TV and send it to her.

The Christian Taliban doesn't care about civil rights.
