CLEVELAND, Ohio (NBC) -- Women can now spot breast cancer earlier thanks to 3D mammograms.
The new technology is called Tomosynthesis.
It's been studied for the past ten years and received FDA approval this past February.
It looks like a normal mammography machine, but instead of the four standard X-ray pictures, it takes about 200 images, similar to an MRI.
"The benefit is we have decreased call backs so there's less women getting called back for additional imaging and also our cancer detection rates should be higher. We should be able to find cancer smaller and at earlier stages so we have a better chance of cure," says radiologist Dr. Donna Plecha.
"This new technology offers fast, high-quality 3D imaging of the breast and is an important new tool in our arsenal to detect breast cancer early when it is treatable. It makes breast tumors easier to see in dense breast tissue," Dr. Plecha says.
