The Kansas City Chiefs named Jim Zorn the club’s quarterbacks coach on Tuesday. Zorn is entering his 23rd season in coaching and his 15th in the NFL ranks. He also had an 11-year playing career in the National Football League in addition to one season in the Canadian Football League.
Zorn joins the Chiefs after serving as the QBs coach for the Baltimore Ravens in 2010. He served as the head coach of the Washington Redskins (2008-09) for two seasons. Prior to joining the Redskins, he spent seven years as the QBs coach with Seattle (2001-07) after holding the same position for Detroit (’98-00). He originally entered the NFL coaching ranks as an offensive assistant with Seattle in ’97.
“We are excited to finalize our coaching staff today with the addition of Jim Zorn,” Head Coach Todd Haley said. “As a former head coach with more than two decades of experience playing and coaching the quarterback position in the NFL, Jim has a tremendous working knowledge of the game, and he will play a big role in the continued development of our football team.”
The Whittier, California native spent eight seasons coaching at the collegiate level, including two campaigns at the University of Minnesota (’95-96). Zorn served as the offensive coordinator at Utah State (’92-94) for three seasons. He entered the coaching profession at Boise State (’89-91), coaching both the quarterbacks and wide receivers.
Zorn’s NFL playing career included time with Tampa Bay (’87), Green Bay (’85) and Seattle (’76-84) after entering the NFL as a rookie free agent with Dallas in ’75. He played in 140 games (106 starts), completing 1,669 of 3,149 passes for 21,115 yards with 111 TDs and 141 interceptions for a 67.3 passer rating. He also saw action in three postseason contests (one start). Zorn appeared in one game with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL in ’86. He set 44 school records in two seasons as a quarterback at Cal Poly Pomona after beginning his collegiate career at Cerritos College. He prepped at Gahr High School in Cerritos, California.
