ARLINGTON, Texas -- The K-State Wildcat fans who are in Texas for the Cotton Bowl were treated to a major announcement Thursday.
During a pep rally, the fans got their first look at a $75 million expansion plan to Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
The plan played across the big screen at the ballpark at Arlington.
It's a campaign to expand and rebuild the west side of the stadium.
"What we want here is a facility that's going to be first-rate in the country," said Kirk Shulz, K-State President. "It's going to represent Kansas State Wildcat Athletics well. It's going to help the university move forward and give that 'wow' factor when people first come onto campus."
"This project honors our fans as well as the transformational efforts of Bill Snyder," said John Currie, K-State Athletic Director.
The West Stadium Center Campaign is phase two of a six-step master plan. The $75 million is still being raised.
University officials are confident K-State supporters are willing to pay the price.
"A lot of people have had a 'Well, it's about time' kind of philosophy in a positive sense, saying 'Hey, we've been to Oklahoma and Stillwater. We've seen what a great scene they have there. We want to see the same kind of facilities in Manhattan'," said Shulz.
Also, in this year of conference realignment, officials believe this type of project will have K-State in a better position for the future.
"It certainly underscores the fact that we need to continue to invest and we don't take for granted our position, while we certainly are very confident and excited about the future of our league," said Currie.
Construction is expected to begin before the start of next football season.
