AUSTIN, Texas – No. 24 Texas amassed 589 yards of total offense and ate up almost 41 minutes of clock in a 43-0 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks Saturday night. The Jayhawks collected only 46 total yards on 36 plays, the second-fewest yards gained by a Kansas offense in the program’s history.
Kansas drops to 2-6 on the season, including 0-5 in Big 12 play. Texas improved to 5-2 on the season and 2-2 in conference play.
In front of 99,112, the largest crowd to watch the Jayhawks in over two seasons, the UT offense put on an offensive display, nearly 600 yards on the ground and controlling the ball for over two-thirds of the game. The Kansas defense would force two turnovers and add on three tackles-for-loss.
The Jayhawk defense also came up big in the first when they stopped consecutive Texas drives to keep the Longhorns within reach. The first came when senior linebacker Steven Johnson and sophomore linebacker Prinz Kande stopped UT quarterback David Ash short of the goal line on fourth and goal to force a turnover-on-downs. The second came when junior corner Greg Brown intercepted a Conner Ash pass in the end zone. The pick was Brown’s second of his career and first of the season.
Senior linebacker Steven Johnson had a standout night for the KU defense, collecting 18 tackles, a career high and is the most since Justin Spring tackled 17 against Colorado in 2009.
Freshman safety Keaston Terry, junior safety Bradley McDougald and junior linebacker Isaac Wright also had career nights for the Jayhawks, all recording career-highs in tackles. Terry collected 15 stops, Wright chipped in with 12 and McDougald added 11.
Sophomore quarterback Jordan Webb completed 7-of-16 passes for 48 yards; the longest of the night coming on a twenty-yard screen pass to freshman running back Brandon Bourbon. Freshmen running backs Darrian Miller and Tony Pierson combined for a 11 yards rushing. The Jayhawks -2 yards rushing mark was a season low.
The Jayhawks will return to the gridiron on Saturday, Nov. 6 against the Iowa State Cyclones in Ames, Iowa. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m.
