Emporia State’s Alli Volkens, who led the MIAA in scoring and rebounding in conference games only, was a unanimous first-team All-MIAA selection by the league coaches.

Volkens averaged 17.6 points and 12.2 rebounds per game for the Lady Hornets on the season. For the season she led the league in total rebounds, offensive and defensive rebounds, was ranked second in blocked shots to Rachel Luteyn of Missouri Western and free throw percentage to Traci Keyser of Ft. Hays State and was third in the league in field goal percentage. She increased her scoring in conference games only to 18.5 points per game to lead the league. She was the only three-time MIAA Player of the Week this season.

Balcom averaged 11.5 points and 6.8 rebounds to lead all MIAA freshmen in both categories.  She is ranked eighth in all-time freshman scoring at Emporia State with 299 points. She has had three double-doubles in the last four games for ESU.  She was the only freshman to earn MIAA Player of the Week honors this year.

Volkens and Balcom will be among the players recognized prior to the 6 p.m. game on Friday at the MIAA Tournament. The Lady Hornets will open play in the MIAA tournament on Friday against sixth seeded Central Missouri.  Tip-off is set for 8:15 p.m. in Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. This is the ninth straight year ESU has been the third seed or higher in the MIAA Tournament.
