EMPORIA - Emporia State University men’s basketball Coach David Moe has notified the University that he does not plan to return for the 2011-12 season.  Moe just completed his tenth season at ESU.

“It has been difficult for me and for my family to be separated for long periods of time throughout the year” said Coach Moe. “Trying to balance the responsibilities of being the head basketball coach at Emporia State, and my responsibilities as a husband and a father, has become more difficult as I see my sons and daughter grow up.”

Moe’s wife Cristi, sons Barry and Tommy and daughter Lyndie have been living in Delaware for the past three years.  Moe plans to remain in the coaching profession, but will relocate closer to his family.

Moe was 162-126 in his ten years with the Hornets.  He twice led ESU to the NCAA Tournament in 2004 and 2007.  He is the third winningest coach in Hornet basketball history behind ESU Hall of Honor members Gus Fish and Ron Slaymaker.  He is one of just three coaches to take his team to every MIAA Post Season Tournament held in Kansas City and has advanced to the semifinals of the tournament in four of the last six years.

“Coach Moe has shared his talent and effort with ESU basketball for many years, and we’ll always be grateful to him for that” said Director of Athletics Kent Weiser.  “He has led our men’s basketball program to heights previously unachieved.”

The Hornets finished the 2003-04 season 22-6, ranked #22 in the nation and made their first ever appearance in the NCAA Division II national tournament. The 22 wins was a six game improvement on the floor for ESU over the previous year and an incredible 15 game turn around from the 2002 season. The Hornets were ranked as high as #8 in the nation during the 2006-07 season when they opened the year with a record setting 16 game winning streak.

The Hornets were 103-38 in White Auditorium under coach Moe.  They have been ranked in the top 25 in the nation in average attendance in each of the last eight years.

The Hornets had three MIAA Freshmen of the Year during his tenure, matching MSSU for the most in the MIAA during that time. Brady Webb, Shawn Herrman and Wes Book were each named MIAA Freshman of the Year under Moe. In 2003 ESU had it's first ever MIAA Player of the Year, Robbie Ballard.

The ESU men are 14th among all NCAA Division II schools with 1,316 wins in 105 seasons of basketball.

Assistant Coach Wes Book will remain with the program, and will handle the day to day operations until a successor is named.  The search for the new head coach will begin immediately.
