Shockers Roll Past Emporia State, 82-43

WICHITA, Kan. — Senior center Garrett Stutz and senior guard Joe Ragland scored 10 points each to lead Wichita State in an 82-43 exhibition win against Emporia State Tuesday at Charles Koch Arena.

A crowd of 9,862 watched the Shockers outscore the visiting Hornets, 50-23, in the second half while shooting 54.3 percent.

Junior forward Carl Hall picked up a game-high 11 rebounds, including seven offensive boards, and added nine points in the Shockers' lone exhibition of the season.

Antonio DiMaria led Emporia State with nine points.

Wichita State jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the first five minutes of the game, including three points each from Ragland and junior guard Demetric Williams.

Back-to-back three pointers by Emporia State cut the Shocker lead to 10-9 and the Hornets later tied the score, 13-13, on a jumper by Tola Lawal midway through the first half.

The Shockers responded with a 12-0 run that included a three-point play from Hall and three pointer from Randall Vautravers to gain a 25-13 edge with under six minutes left in the half.

Wichita State closed the half with a five-point run to take a 32-20 lead at halftime.

Williams led the Shockers with seven points in the first half on 3-of-6 shooting. Wichita State held the Hornets to 27.6 percent shooting in the half. Stutz and Ehimen Orukpe led the Shockers with four rebounds each.

The Shockers opened the second half on an 11-0 run, holding the Hornets without a field goal for the first 3:45. Ragland picked up five points during the run, and Ben Smith added four points.

Emporia State finished with 22 turnovers in the game. The Shockers outrebounded Emporia State, 46-33. Thirteen Shockers scored in the game.

Wichita State improved to 7-0 in exhibitions against Emporia State and 46-10 in exhibitions dating to the 1970-71 season.

The Shockers open the 2011-12 regular season at 3:05 p.m. Sunday against Charleston Southern at Charles Koch Arena.
