WICHITA, Kan.- Mike Perniciaro has resigned his position as the head softball coach at Wichita State University, Director of Athletics Eric Sexton announced today.

"I want to thank Coach for six years of service and dedication to Shocker Athletics," Sexton said. "We wish he and his staff the best in the future."

Perniciaro, who took over as head coach in 2006, led the Shockers to five Missouri Valley Conference Tournament appearances in his six-year tenure, including a second place finish in 2006.

Wichita State finished seventh in the conference standings the past two seasons, with a combined record of 44-68, while Perniciaro leaves with a 168-179 career record.

Under Perniciaro's direction, 15 Shockers were named All-Missouri Valley Conference athletes, and five were honored as MVC scholar-athletes.

Wichita State will begin a national search to fill the positions immediately.

There is no planned media availability for Dr. Sexton or Coach Perniciaro at this time.
