Dumping your cell phone contract

By Carla Stovall-Steckline

WICHITA, Kansas, Feb 4, 2008 -- Have you ever tried to get out of a cell phone contract? It can usually require some hefty fees. But now there's a way to change without the huge charge.

Ashley Siudmak knows service. It's what she does for a living. So when her cell phone provider gave her lousy service she had no hang-up about saying so.

"I wasn't getting service at home, I wasn't getting service at work, I wasn't getting service in my car, I wasn't getting service anywhere," said Ashley. "You're talking to somebody, then all of a sudden they're 'what? Hello? Are you there? Huh?' Oh man, this phone."

You would think that would allow her to quit her cell contract without penalty but you'd be wrong. There are very few ways to get out of today's cell phone contracts without a hefty penalty, including bad service.

"They said, 'too bad, sorry. If there's anything we can do to help you.' And really there was nothing they could do to help me so I was basically stuck in the contract."

But Ashley helped herself. She found this website: It's basically a contract-swapping service. She posted her info, and within a couple of days she found someone who would take over her contract.

"I just got their telephone number, I called Nextel and said there was somebody that wanted to take over my cell phone contract. They got in touch with the person, did their credit check and they were able to take over my cell phone contract."

She didn't have to give any personal information and the service set her back $20. So if you're looking to assume the remainder of someone's contract, or want out of yours, now you have a place to go.

The question still unanswered, of course, is why the FCC allows cell companies to hold your feet to the fire with a contract when you're unable to get decent reception. But that's another story.
