READING, Pa. (AP) — Doctors and nurses in an eastern Pennsylvania school district are being asked to decline to issue excuses to students who are habitually truant.
Nearly 20 percent of the students in the Reading School District are chronically absent from school. Officials say some students who accrue up to 40 excuses from doctors in a single school year.
The Reading Eagle (http://bit.ly/18KVAyi ) reports that health care officials have been asked to be on the lookout for truant students and resist pressure to issue them excuses.
Dr. D. Michael Baxter of the Reading Health System says, "We don't want to be the enablers for these kids."
He spoke Friday during a panel discussion at Reading Hospital.
