LANSING, Mich. (AP) — State officials have confirmed that the West Nile virus has been found in two Michigan horses.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says Thursday that the horses are in Ingham and Kent counties.
The mosquito-borne disease affects humans and animals. Symptoms in horses include stumbling, tremors, facial paralysis, impaired vision and seizures. Officials urge horse owners to have their animals vaccinated.
West Nile virus causes influenza-like symptoms in infants and older people. The state Department of Community Health reports that a human case of the virus was reported Aug. 1 in Montcalm County.
Last year, 202 people in Michigan were sickened by the virus with 17 deaths reported.
