Derrick Jackson

KSN Meteorologist

Derrick was born in California, but raised in Casey Illinois. He started his career at the age of seven when he had a green wall in his basement. His broadcasting career began in 2014 at his college station in Illinois.

After high school, Derrick put his passion of weather aside and joined the Army where he gained meteorology experience as an air traffic controller while deployed in Afghanistan for 14 months. After retiring from active duty, Derrick continued his military career in the Army National Guard. While still in the Army National Guard, Derrick went to college at Eastern Illinois University to gain more meteorology experience.

While attending college, Derrick won the Silver Dome Award for best student meteorologist. Once he finished school, he followed his love for severe weather and moved to West Texas where he spent two years as the morning meteorologist. While in Texas, Derrick covered many tornadoes and other severe weather events, including an EF3 tornado that hit Big Spring Texas.

Derrick has always been fascinated with severe weather and that is one of the biggest reasons he wanted to join the KSN team here in Wichita.

In Derrick’s spare time you can catch him playing with his two dogs or in the gym. Derrick is also fascinated with military history and loves everything to do with science. You might also catch Derrick eating lots of BBQ food.
