Wichita, Kansas -- A Wichita man says his girlfriend is lucky to be alive after she was run over and dragged by her own car following a carjacking Tuesday morning.
"It must have startled him because when we came back out he panicked," says Willie Young.
Young says his girlfriend started the car Tuesday morning to warm it up. She went back inside. But Willie and his girlfriend heard the car door slam.
"We came running out because we both knew what was happening," explains Willie. "You know, I didn't know if he had a gun or not. I'm trying to break the window to get the dude to get out of the car. And he slammed the door locked. And she gets behind the car thinking he's not going to run me over."
Willie says what happened next was absolutely horrifying.
"And he just stepped on the gas and went from here all the way to there with here underneath the car."
A neighbor called 911. And while Willie's girlfriend was taken to the hospital with relatively moderate injuries, the young man in the car got away.
At least for a time.
Willie and his girlfriend live in South Wichita, but police located the car around noon in East Wichita.
A driver of the stolen car got out and ran from officers. A supervisor on the scene says the suspect took off his shirt and then dove into a small lake to swim away.
Officers walked around to the other side and made the arrest.
Charges are on the way.
As for Willie, he's looking forward to his girlfriend coming home from the hospital. Willie also says he likely won't be warming up the car in the mornings.
"No, no, no, no, no. We won't start the car in the morning. If we do start the car in the morning, I'll be right there at the front door watching."
