WICHITA, Kansas (KSN) – A Wal-Mart worker hailed as a hero for stopping a shoplifter was fired Saturday.  Wal-Mart refuses to comment but Heather Ravenstein says she was told she was being let go because of her actions Friday.

“My stomach started turning instantly,” said Ravenstein.  “I was like 'Are you serious?'  I couldn't believe it.  I was trying to save them money and this is what happens to me.”

Friday night, Ravenstein saw a suspect with a computer in his shopping cart roll out the front door of the West Kellogg Wal-mart. She was suspicious because the computer had security wire still wrapped around it.

Ravenstein says the man refused to show a receipt.

“I just grabbed a hold of it and wasn't letting go,” said Ravenstein. “I wasn't going to let him get away with a $600 computer.”

Wichita Police say the suspect started to punch and kick Ravenstein before jumping into a waiting car and speeding away. Ravenstein has a small bruise on her shoulder but was otherwise uninjured.

At first, Ravenstein says managers at Wal-Mart praised her for stopping the shoplifter.

“They said ‘good job’,” said Ravenstein.  “(The store manager) came and talked to me and said 'Good job. You need to be more careful next time. We appreciate you trying to protect our assets.' I was like 'Yeah,  I'm not going to do it again.''”

But everything changed Saturday when Ravenstein showed up for her shift. She says after her lunch break she was sent to a backroom and told she was fired.

“I don’t think it's fair,” said Ravenstein. “I just hope they catch the guy.”

Ravenstein is a single mother to a four-year-old boy. She says she doesn’t get child support. She hopes she’ll be eligible for unemployment benefits and plans to apply on Monday.

Sue them. And the next time I shop Walmart and have made my purchase of a case of soda, beer, paper towels (12 roll pack) toilet tissue and other items too big for bags and proceed to the door and the greeter asks to see my receipt I will certainly ask if they are management. If not I am walking out that door. I am glad I never worked for Walmart! And young lady good luck with your schooling.

This is how Walmart is going to support their "Save Money - Live Better" slogan which means you can save money by stealing from Walmart Stores & live better. On the other hand Walmart will save its expense by firing their dedicated, hard working, honest employees to live better.

ATTENTION THIEVES !!! FREE COMPUTERS !! A new Wal-Mart policy encourages theft. Please feel free to steal from any local Wal-Mart store. As long as you can get past the door you are free to go. Matters fact you just need to get into the entrance area. If Wal-mart if firing employees for stopping shoplifters they wont stop anymore shoplifters. Its a Great Time To Be A Thief. ( I know the guy below me just dug this post out the dust balls, but I still had to say something. )

That is a bunch of Crap!!! She was Complimented than Fired. What is the Matter with these People at Walmart DO THEY OK SHOPLIFTING THATS WRONG!!! You see thats why People Don't get Involved. Well my Family and I and my Friends Don't Approve of Theft of any kind. So we are not shopping at Walmart anymore. How can you feel safe in the store or in the Parking lot. Employees will stand there and watch you get mugged or killed,And won't get Involved because there afraid of losing there Jobs and they have Families to take care of. I'll bet If Sam Walton was still alive and running everything She would have been Rewarded and comlimented. You see Sam was an Honest Man,Not like that bunch of Dummys you have running the show now!!! We will start our shopping at Kmart and JC Pennys, And Food Shopping at Super-one Signed. I think the employee should get a medal even if I can understand the prohibition. I could care less if I give Wal-Mart one cent of my business anyway. I can't stand that store! I go out of my way to reduce their same store sales figures! I like their competition way better, and they are almost ALWAYS cheaper that Wally World anyway! :(

Anyone caught shoplifting at WalMart should have their hand cut off which is what happens to shoplifters in Middle Eastern countries

Walkmart is the worst thing to happen to America. They have become too powerful, sell mostly chinese stuff at the expense of American jobs, and now this! Yeah, they are big, but if american would bind together and boycott these jerks, we could bring them down!

No more shopping at Wal-Mart for me. This is crap! I understand that they don't want employees to put themselves in harm's way, but firing her is way out of line. Wal-Mart quit caring about employees and customers a long time ago.

It's common sense, don't run after a thief....let the police do it. That's what we pay taxes for, you should have called 911. And I'm sorry, but it was NOT the right thing for you to do...for your own safety. You have no idea what you could have walked into. I'm glad you're fine, but I hope you learned from this. Agreed, Wal-Mart shouldn't have fired you, that is extreme. Good luck to you.
