TOPEKA, Kansas (AP) - Kansas would impose a new tax on soda – a penny for every teaspoon of sugar - under a proposal for closing a budget shortfall.

The Senate Ways and Means Committee agreed Tuesday to sponsor the bill at the request of Republican Sen. John Vratil of Leawood.

The measure would raise $90 million during the fiscal year beginning July 1.

The cost to consumers would be a dime on every 12-ounce can of regular soda.

The Senate committee is also weighing a proposal to raise sales and tobacco taxes.

Kansas faces a projected $467 million budget shortfall for the fiscal year beginning July 1. Top Republican senators, including Vratil, are pushing for $300 million in tax increases.

Get the numbers for your state offices.. Call and voice your concerns. If we dont speak up, we Will each and every one of us lose our rights. This will not stop with soda pop. All you people who thought you were safe because it was the smokers are fools. You dont think they want your money too?? I hope all of you can see now that this is way bigger than you can imagine. They are simply seeing how far that can push us. How much can they insult the citizens of their state without them saying a single thing. I guess we will see how much we are willing to take without even making a simple phone call, or protesting at all. Next it will be air tax. They will make it really small like water, but they will tax us to breath.. It really is coming. When it does will you all just quietly complain or will you attend city council meeting, call your legislators, congressmen, or even simply Vote. If we dont stand up against it we deserve what we get.. And of course I am referring to any and all peaceful means. Dont do anything stupid to protest the things you dont agree with.

Tired of it....I can see you have never lived on unemployment...you do without and scrape to maybe get by. It is hard. Me, I WANT a job. I had a $28K/yr job and survival was hard...I can't support a family on a $17K/yr job evemn if I coulod find one. I have send out tons of apps and resumes in the past 8 months, and have only had a handfull of interviews. Yeah, maybe some abuse the system, but don't put all of us in that boat. Some of us hate being laid off AND ARE REALLY TRYING!!!

What people forget is that they tried this in the 70's and that's why there currently is NO sugar in soda pop, it's HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP not sugar, so how can they have a sugar tax in pop when there isn't any sugar in it????? Will diet soda NOT be taxed??? Or is this just a soda tax??? Sweet tea? How much tax there??

Maybe the government could grow (or borrow) a pair and start DEPORTING ILLEGALS that are sucking our money up as fast as Obama's rating is dropping. Hey ICE, when will you raid Farmland, Cornejo, and the others?

Why doesn't anybody talk about the cost of the illegal aliens? From welfare to free school to crime they are breaking us. I read that every illegal alien family that's head of household has less than a high school degree cost taxpayers $19k per year.

What the State needs to do to help the current financial crisis is cut off the losers whom are on their 2nd unemployment extension. I personally know 3 people that are enjoying their unemployment extension that are NOT activly seeking employment and have no plans to do so. When the Feds had to subsidize the states UI fund, that means that now us working TAXPAYERS are paying these worthless losers to screw off. Pull the tit from their mouths, they will have to go back to work and PAY TAXES! One person I know calls his weekly benefit check a "paycheck". How rediculous. Come on people, wake up! Write your congressmen and representitives and demand that they look into this abuse of the system!

The goverment itself state or federal is nothing more than a buisiness, right?? With that said, looking from a business standpoint, do you keep raising the costs or cut your overhead? If there is a way to cut overhead most people would go that way so they could provide the best product for there customer. I would hate for anyone to loose their job who works for the state, but I bet there is alot of wasteful spending going on. So go ahead and keep raising taxes on everything because thats your easy answer to cover up your own short commings.

I've got an idea let's quit outsourcing work to other countries. All our problems started when we started outsourcing work.
