WICHITA, Kansas -- Police have arrested a parolee in connection with the murder of a homeless man.

Marshall Hauschulz, 41, was found beaten to death near the Arkansas River, across from the Keeper of the Plains statue, December 16.

In the two months since his death, police say they have uncovered new evidence.

Arlene Hauschulz is breathing a sigh of relief now that there's an arrest for her son's murder.

"I know he doesn't deserve this. I mean nobody, nobody deserves this," Hauschulz said. "I'm just hoping those angels surrounded him and he didn't feel it, he didn't know what happened."

Police arrested a suspect Monday night near Central and Broadway.

They have not released the suspect's name, but they say he is a 39-year-old man who is also homeless.

According to authorities, the suspect was released on parole last fall and had been interviewed previously in the murder investigation.

"He was arrested for first-degree murder and we will be presenting the case later this week to the district attorney's office for charging," said Lt. Randy Reynolds, Wichita Police Department.

For Arlene, her grief doesn't end with the loss of her son.

"I just feel sorry for his folks and I just feel so angry that society didn't step in for this young man, that society didn't say, 'Maybe that could be my kid.' Maybe they would do something," she said.
