LAWRENCE, Kansas The investigation at the University of Kansas into allegations of verbal and borderline physical abuse by football Coach Mark Mangino continues.

Despite rumors that Mangino could be fired before Saturday’s game at Texas, KU’s Sports Information Department says there is no news conference scheduled for Friday.

In various published reports, ex-players allege that Mangino is verbally abusive, using personal matters against them.

Former KU Linebacker and Captain Joe Mortensen said Mangino would refer to Mortensen’s drinking arrest around teammates, threatening to send him home where “he’d be drinking out of a brown paper bag the rest of his life.”

Raymond Brown said that shortly after is brother was shot, Mangino threatened to send him home to “get shot with his homies.”

But others defend Mangino, saying he’s no different than any major college football coach.

On his radio show Thursday night, Mangino said some of the stories are “flat-out embellished” and “people are embarrassing this program just for their 15 minutes of fame.”

Friday, new Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little gave her backing to Lew Perkins and staff, saying Mangino’s review is consistent with his contract. In a statement, she urged everyone to wait until the process is completed before drawing conclusions.
