SEDGWICK COUNTY, KansasYoung children were carried away on stretchers in one of two bus crashes early Friday morning.

One of the two accidents happened at around
7:30 a.m. near 95th St. S. and Rock Rd. Deputies say a 17-year-old driver ran stop sign south of Derby and collided with a day care bus. She was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries while crews at the scene kept busy taking care of the other victims.

There were at least 10 victims in the crash; seven of them were children that were riding in the tipped over KinderCare bus from Mulvane. Luckily they only sustained minor injuries.

"I believe with the seat belts on, that's what limited the severity of injuries of the accident,” said Capt. George Mason with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department.

The driver of a white Grand AM, who allegedly caused the accident, was not as fortunate. She was pinned inside the car and eventually airlifted to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

"I was going north on my way to school and that bus of kids going south and then lady going across 95th was going full speed and hit the bus,” said accident victim William Messer. “And the bus went into my lane and ran into me.”

William’s car is a total loss and his elbow is a bit cut up, but he knows it could have been much worse. Investigators are now trying to determine if weather was a factor. Heavy fog was reported in the area and the sun’s angle could have limited visibility.

Police responded to another school bus accident in northern Sedgwick County at 85th St. N. and Ridge Rd. just after 7 a.m.

A Valley Center school bus had stopped on the road to pick up a student when a car slammed into the back of it. Twenty-five students were on the bus and three were taken to the hospital to be checked out. No one else on the bus was injured.

There is no word yet on the condition of the driver of the vehicle that hit the bus.
