WICHITA, Kansas -- The carjacking suspect has now been identified as Darren Baker, 52, of Wichita. He was killed Monday after authorities say he opened fire on officers.
The shooting came after a high speed chase from western Sedgwick County into Reno County.
Investigators say it started with a carjacking near Douglas and Meridian in Wichita at 12:45 Monday afternoon.
A short time later, a Goddard police officer spotted the car. The officer allegedly witnessed a traffic violation and tried to pull the car over.
From Goddard, Baker led police on a high-speed chase into Reno County. There are reports that speeds topped 100 miles per hour.
The chase ended on Parallel Road south of Yoder.
"The individual stopped his vehicle, exited the vehicle and started shooting at the officers," said Sheriff Randy Henderson, Reno County. "Officers returned fire and, subsequently, the individual was killed."
Four officers were involved in the shooting.
Baker was pronounced dead at scene.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation are continuing their investigation into the incident.
