WICHITA, Kansas – A 16-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after being shot in the face Tuesday evening.

Police say the boy and three other people were playing cards at an apartment in the 1500 block of W. Pawnee at around 6 p.m. when a 17-year-old boy pointed a small-caliber handgun at him and pulled the trigger. A bullet hit the boy in the cheek.

The boy was dropped of at the Wal-Mart at Pawnee and Broadway where police were called. The 17 year old later turned himself in at the Patrol South Bureau Station.

Police say right now it appears the shooting was accidental.

"We have kids having a gun that shouldn't have had a gun in the first place,” said Capt. Brent Allred with the Wichita Police Department. β€œIt's an unfortunate deal of course the 16 year old is very lucky, but you hate to see this stuff occur. But there's no reason for these kids, this kid, the person we arrested to have a handgun in the first place."

The boy is expected to recover. The 17 year old faces a charge of aggravated battery.

Wow... Being shot in the cheek is an entirely different story than getting shot in the face, which resulted in damage to his windpipe, and chest. Did they not care enough about this story to learn those facts? or did they intentionally want this to seem like "not a big deal"

what they didnt report right/ the bullet went thru his jaw and windpipe ending up in his chest. not a graze to the cheek.
