Just before the accident, emergency dispatchers got several reports about the car driving southbound in the northbound lanes of traffic. Still, that wasn't enough notice to stop what happened.

The 5-car crash occurred just after eight last night on Highway 77 just north of Strother field, which is south of Winfield.

The wrong way driver, 22-year old Joseph Peters, was in a Chevy Impala. He crashed head on into a GMC Yukon.

Crews had to extricate Peters from the Impala.  He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Northbound traffic on highway 77 was shut down for about two hours, to help with clean-up efforts and allow investigators to process the scene.

Two other people were seriously injured in this crash, and seven more were treated for minor injuries and released.

This is the second crash caused by a wrong-way driver in our area in less than a week.
