FORT MEYERS, Florida, July 15, 2008 (NBC) -- A Florida jury has awarded $1 million to a woman who sued Wal-Mart after slipping on chicken grease in a Fort Myers store.
The Lee County jurors returned their verdict in favor of 57-year-old Linda Gail Wright, who claimed that Wal-Mart's negligence resulted in her fall in October of 2002.
Wright was shopping at the store for Halloween candy on that date when she slipped on "oil and water" from chickens that were packaged by Wal-Mart in plastic containers, according to her attorney's written statement.
She suffered "debilitating neck injuries," which have resulted in multiple cervical spine surgeries.
She now has a permanent titanium implant in her neck.
Six years and two neck surgeries later, Wright says she's still on a box full of medication.
Wright, who owes more than $123,000 in medical bills, previously was an avid horse trainer and rider.
"There are a lot of things I've had to give up. I love horses, we used to have ten," Wright said.
The $1 million judgment was much more than the $600,000 her legal team had asked for.
Wright's battle isn't over yet.
Her lawyer expects Wal-Mart to come back swinging.
A release from Wal-Mart spokeswoman Sharon Weber read: "Our associates work hard to provide a safe shopping environment for our customers. We respectfully disagree with the jury's decision and we're considering our post trial options."
Wright says she didn't have insurance and part of the money will go towards paying her medical bills.
