Epilepsy bike trip

By Jason Kravarik

June 20, 2007 (NBC) - Nothing is harder for a parent than to watch their child suffer or become ill. One father is showing his love for his son by attempting something most of us could never imagine.

Glenn Fenster starts his day similarly to everyone else.

He drinks his coffee, checks his e-mails, brushes his teeth, packs his things for the day and goes to work, but that is where the similarities end, as Glenn gets on his bike to continue his ride across North America to raise epilepsy awareness.

"I am riding to show my son that no matter the disability the mind or body, anything can be accomplished," Fenster said.

At 2-years-old, Nyle Fenster was diagnosed with a severe case of epilepsy. Soon after, Glenn realized that the disease is only a disability if it is viewed as one. A lesson he learned from his son four years ago on the tennis court.

"He was getting ready to run down a shot and a seizure hit,” Fenster said. “He hit the ground so hard. By the time I got to him his seizure was finished. I offered him my hand up to help him up. He was bleeding from the arm. And he slapped my hand away. I said, ‘Nyle don't you want help up?’ He said, ‘No.’ I said Nyle, 'How do you keep getting up?' And he looked at me and said, ‘Dad, I've never seen you stay down.'"

After that, Glenn sold his car, bought a bicycle, and planned to ride across the continent to get his son's message out and raise awareness.

Glenn started his trip in Anchorage, Alaska on April 30, and on July 4 he will finish his trip in Miami, Florida after riding 6,200 miles.

"I'm a man on a mission with a message,” Fenster said. “And that message is for every person suffering from epilepsy to pursue your dreams, conquer your goals, and never give up. Each day offers life another opportunity to achieve the impossible."
