Doctor's office with a warm atmosphere

By Kevin White

WICHITA, Kansas, Dec. 21, 2007 -- How many of you actually like going to the doctor? Okay, lets rephrase that. How many of you would spend an hour in an Italian villa? It's what the Center for Women's Health is offering.

When you think of cool interior design, you think of fancy homes or Old Town lofts -- not the doctor's office. That is, until you visit the Center for Women's Health.

"We did a lot or research to really try to develop a building that is just a lot different from anything else that's in town," said Dr. Sharon Breit."

Going to the doctor can be a pretty intimidating experience. Often the traditional cold, sterile atmosphere of a doctor's office can add a lot of stress to your checkup. Well, the doctors at the Center for Women's Health have done something different. They have created an atmosphere that is more inviting. You might actually call it 'ambiance'.

"My husband even came in here with me for some of my doctor's appointments when I was pregnant," said patient Mindy Chance. "He's like 'hey, I'll come with you to every appointment. This is fabulous.'"

Doctor's Breit and Strecker have dreamed of this facility since they joined forces in 2002. It's more like a northern Italian villa than a clinic.

"I think that we all appreciate kind of an 'old world' feel and just some Tuscany architecture and design involved," said Dr. Karen Strecker. "Just the atmosphere itself is not going to take away all the anxiety and making a doctors visit stress-free, but certainly it's gone a long way to help."

If you think all this must have a woman's touch, well you'd be right. This is an all-women practice. The atmosphere is enhanced by amenities like flannel examination gowns, soft music, a flavored water bar, and of course, chocolate.

They have been in their North Webb Road facility for a year now and their balance sheet shows that it works. Business is up substantially.

"About 300%," said Dr. Breit.

The three-fold growth in their practice confirms that patients seem to like the Tuscan experience. So what about the doctors?

"Other physicians look at it as, you know, an individual choice. It's not for everybody. Not every physician is going to feel comfortable working in this environment. We love it. I love coming to work here," said Dr. Breit.

Doctor's Breit and Strecker say there is room to expand their villa -- or office. A fourth doctor and more physician assistants are in the near future. They don't have to worry about space. The architect designed this building for expansion -- for a lot more of this good thing.
