WICHITA, Kansas, Dec. 25, 2007 -- Remember that ram-shackle tree house where the boys used to spend hours upon hours? That special place for men to assemble has evolved into a thriving business.
It's a location for men, a place for business deals and pedicures, relaxation and recreation -- a man's business that very few people thought could make it.
Craig Allen's is a men's spa of sorts. Then again, it's a meeting place where you can get a haircut and a manicure and maybe do a little business and, well, smoke a cigar after a message. Then play some pool.
What is this place?
"It's a guy's place -- simply a guy's place," said Craig Tatro, co-partner. "If you cold design the basement -- if your wife would let you design the basement -- this is how you'd do it."
Many Wichitan's thought that a men's club with a focus on grooming would never fly in this town. But three years later, Craig Allen's is just about where partners Craig and Eric expected it to be. Their biggest surprise is that much of the grooming is done on men who were never accustomed to getting facials or manicures.
I guess you could say that Craig Allen's is helping Wichita look sharp.
"A lot of my close friends, you know, they were nay-sayer's. Those are all gone now. Back in the 50's, guys who took care of themselves, they were gentlemen. It was the guy that, you know, we thought sat like this, went to those salons. It's totally not that guy."
Men who want to enjoy services typically marketed to women are often intimidated by a woman's salon. Craig Allen's offers a pedicure but it's done in a leather club chair and it's called a 'foot detail.'
A manicure is a sport's manicure.' After a treatment, men are encouraged to hang out -- maybe smoke a cigar.
It's also a place to maybe break the ice on a business deal.
"Oh yes, definitely. There's guys seeking deals in that cigar lounge. Because it's non-threatening. Instead of meeting at your office, my office, over drinks or something, meet at Craig Allen's."
Craig and Eric say that they are shooting for about 500 members. After three years, they re three-quarter's of the way there. The concept is doing well enough that they are closing a deal for a Craig Allen's near Kansas City in Leawood.
Craig Allen's currently has 330 dues-paying members, but the business makes most of its' money from it's 900 or so walk-in's.
