Caffe Moderne in Old Town

By Don Grant

WICHITA, Kansas, Jan 29, 2008 -- It seems that the "hot spots" in town are even hotter when you think you've found a gem. And there's one in Old Town that's definitely creating some buzz.

What drives an entrepreneur to give up the security of a 'real' job to follow a dream?

"I woke up from a hysterectomy the next morning, looked at my husband and said 'gosh, I think I want to have a coffee shop,'" said Janet Rine, owner of Caffe Moderne.

Janet admits she didn't have the restaurant experience but her business sense made up for it. Her husband, Grant, took his passion for antiques and found the materials that define Caffe Moderne.

"We were basically the designers," said Janet. "He came in and provided the materials, I decided where it went and we just made it happen."

The first thing you'll notice at Caffe Moderne is the decor, not surprisingly it's from the Moderne period which followed Art Deco of the 1930's.

The antique floors are salvaged, the magnificent bar was pulled from an establishment in Kansas City and the detailed panels are from a church. The table's bases are made from a tractor disc and the planetary sign out front is made from Weber bar-b-que kettles.

Cafe Moderne has won awards for its exceptional coffee. But this restaurant is becoming known for its gelato, or Italian ice -- and for good reason. It's made from all fresh ingredients and it's much better for you because the base is milk, not cream. Who would've thought that something so tasty could actually, kind of, be good for you.

"I wanted to recreate a coffee shop that I used to go to when I was with a girlfriend in Kansas City," said Janet.

The restaurant enjoys are rare word-of-mouth buzz.

Janet used her own resources for most of the initial start-up, and financed about 30% to pay for the gelato machines, display cases and the Italian espresso maker.

In spite of that, Caffe Moderne turns a tidy monthly profit. The clientele are mostly baby-boomers, but an edgy, artsy crowd populates the place at night.

"Truthfully, in five years I would like to see other Caffe Moderne's in other cities," said Janet.

So, now you're in on the secret. Shhh, don't tell anybody!
