Changing hands after 30 years

By Kevin White

WICHITA, Kansas, Feb 19, 2008 -- After three decades of helping Kansans make music, some notable changes will be made at Senseny Music.

A high school band director influenced Denny Senseny as a child so much that he chose music as his career. After 11 years with a secure job in music education, it was time for Denny to change his tune.

"I took my $18,000 of teacher retirement money and bought a van and started calling on schools," said Denny.

Senseny knew what schools needed but he built his business by focusing on the student's needs.

"Parents needed an instrument that's affordable that's from a place that will provide service when it breaks."

You can buy a guitar just about anywhere. You can go online and perhaps save 10% but you aren't going to get the service, nor are you going to get to pick it up and try a few licks before you purchase it. Denny Senseney has built his business on service and innovation and that is what he believes is going to carry Senseney Music forward.

Denny still cares about his business growth, even after signing a deal to sell his $6-million per year store. His swan song will be sung on the 30th anniversary of the business.

"We opened the store on April Fool's day in 1978 and so I decided when you're that close to 30 years, why don't we just make the closing on March 31st."

Long time employee, Lori Supinie created the perfect opportunity for Denny to exit stage right. She is an accomplished musician, holds an MBA and is a CPA.

"I am purchasing a business but I'm really taking advantage of a great opportunity," said Supinie.

Lori's strategy is to continue to foster music education through traditional channels and expand Senseny's internet presence.

Lori will keep the Senseny name. As a former business owner, Denny says he will continue to work to promote music on a local and national level through boards and organizations.
