WICHITA, Kansas, Feb 29, 2008 -- When it comes to decorating your home, a splash of color on the wall might work, but let's kick it up a notch; how about a mural or maybe even a "faux finish?" It's a concept that's become a stroke of genius for two local women.
You see it on the home improvement shows, in the design magazines and at the Showcase of Homes -- faux wall finishes are replacing traditional wallpaper and flat latex colors.
Graphic designers Susan Bane and Sarah Scott hope to build their new business on this trend.
"We had a call. Someone wanted us to do a job and we said 'hey, I guess we're in business,'" said Susan Bane, co-owner, VIDIchiART Studios.
Sarah and Susan have only had their studio open a few months and they are still trying to find their niche. They offer classes where they teach you how to do the finishes. They also sell the materials that are used in the process. But their specialty is going on location to create the finishes -- like a crocodile skin or burlwood finish. It's amazing how realistic they are.
The two met while working as illustrators for an aircraft manufacturer. They enjoyed the work but both pined for more classic art. Susan went back to art school and Sarah traveled to Italy to hone her craft.
Creating this type of business was natural for their skills.
"Since we're graphic designers, we do our own advertising. We can do our own website -- all that. That saves a lot."
The two used their own savings to open the business. And while the actual painting is their focus, they also want to share some secrets of their trade.
"We teach the do-it-yourselfer and the professional both, so yeah, anyone can come in here and learn how to do this."
Living in Wichita has its advantages, and not just for the business owner. You, the consumer, can indulge in all of this for less.
"So in L.A. or New York it would run about $18 to $20 per square foot. Here we charge about $14 to $15 per square foot."
L.A. luxury at Wichita prices -- and a quality finish. It's a business plan for the ladies of VIDIchiART Studios that's truly a work of art.
