Business Beat: Biker's Edge revs up Wichita

By Jessica Oakley

WICHITA, Kansas, May 13, 2008 – For many guys and gals, one business is their adult playground. Biker’s Edge on Central sells the ever popular Harley Davidson and a few new brands that have helped ‘rev up’ business in the past few years.

“I checked this morning and we're up 56 percent from where we were last year,” said general manager Brian West. “So, those are incredible numbers. We really attribute it to Polaris and Victory motorcycles and Triumph also.

Biker's Edge is the perfect example of how a business needs to stay nimble and be able to change to survive. 80 years ago, it was the Harley dealership for Winfield, KS.

The market changed and they moved to Newton and they sold only accessories, used bikes and service. At this current location they got caught up in the custom bike craze, which ended too. Now, much to the dismay of hard-core bikers, they even sell scooters.

“Schwinn -- everybody knows that name from the bicycles.” West said. “So, we took that name on and we have scooters now and we're selling them like hotcakes.

The next hot motorcycle trend is “Baggers”: big bikes with solid saddlebags that seat a passenger. West says they’re popular with all buyers. He says 70 percent of his customers buy for pleasure; the other 30 percent consider their bike transportation.

Some of the new bikes are so well balanced; they can fall over and not even crack a mirror. A Victory costs from $13,000 to $23,000.

West anticipates continued growth, but profit margin is not a big concern.

“If the customer is happy they are going to come back and spend more money,” said West.

The scooters and baggers are so popular; Biker’s Edge is outgrowing its space. You’ll probably see them at a new location in the near future.
