Business Beat: One-stop medical facility

By Jessica Oakley

WICHITA, Kansas, May 21, 2008 – You can call it a one-stop medical shop. A west side facility is taking a new approach to meet your medical needs.

Matt Lillie has graduated from buying and selling real estate to developing it.

A few years ago, he purchased an abandoned Catholic school on Maize Rd. not exactly knowing what he would do with it. His doctor suggested a medical facility.

“We just started asking people, physicians primarily, what do we think that the west side of town needs?” Lillie said.

Lillie’s doctor became his partner and suggested they stay away from typical the typical corporate owned medical facility model.

“We opened it up to the medical community and said if you want to be a part of a medical development,” said Lillie. “Everybody else in town is trying to exclude you, we want to include you, come be a part of ours.”

Phase one of the Family Health and Rehab Center is complete. Lillie and his partners visualize everything from a small general hospital on the property to vision, dental and even women's health care. And they expect it all to be done by the end of 2010.

There are about 60 investors who financed the land and facilities. They expect a 10 to 20 percent annual return on their money. They are already focused on the next project.

“We're looking heavily at Derby and we're looking at what other communities would be best served by that,” Lillie said.

The total cost of the Maize Rd. facility is about $40 million. Lillie and his partners are confident that their one-stop campus will fill a niche in smaller communities that surround larger cities.
