Business Beat: Staying connected with Hubris Communications

By Jessica Oakley

WICHITA, Kansas, August 13, 2008 – It’s at the tip of our fingers, but good Internet service isn’t always easy to find. Amidst the major providers however, is a Kansas company providing local service.

The keys to running a successful enterprise include having a clear focus of the service or product and doing it in an effective manner without sacrificing quality.

Chris Owen’s Hubris Communications has one main product: Internet service.

“We've really done a very good job of keeping the manpower requirements really low,” said Owen. “We've automated a lot of things that used to take a lot of manual labor.”

Back when residential demand for Internet service was in its infancy -- remember dial-up? -- There were about 600 Internet service providers in Kansas. Now, there are only about a dozen. Most of them are big companies that have swallowed up all these small businesses. Hubris Communications has survived and even flourished in spite of that, primarily because of service.

“Things like answering the phone and getting back to people, not outsourcing all of our technical support to Malaysia, we've really done a good job of being responsive to the customers,” Owen said.

A huge concern for just about every Internet user is e-mail spam.

“We actually define three levels of incoming mail -- there's the good, the bad and the maybe,” Owen said.

It’s obvious what happens to the “good” and “bad” e-mails. But the “maybes” are included in a summary of incoming messages that is easily scanned to determine if “good” e-mail didn’t get through. This sophisticated, yet simple spam control, is included for all Hubris subscribers. However, they are set to offer it to customers who use outside ISP’s. And that’s not all.

“All of our business class services are monitored,” Owen said. “We actually are monitoring that circuit every three minutes, so if something goes wrong with one of our business class customers, we'll usually know before they do.”

Business is steady and growing. No matter how big they get, Chris will keep the “small company” service that has helped Hubris flourish.
