Junk Boys

By Jessica Oakley

WICHITA, Kansas, August 27, 2008 – Fresh out of WSU with at degree in finance, Nick Naparstek was on the management tract at a big corporation. But he wanted his own enterprise. All he needed was an idea. It all came to him when he needed to get rid of some junk, didn’t have a truck to haul it and really didn’t know where to take it.

”Well, if I'm in the position, then other people have to be in the same position, so there's an opportunity and I just made it happen,” Naparstek said.

A number of months later, with $20,000 in savings for operating cash and a bank loan on a truck, Junk Boys were born. He used every cent.

“After month three, we officially broke even,” he said. “We charged based upon volume, so it’s all dependent up on the amount of items that we remove from your house. Prices start as low as 79 dollars then just go up from there,” he said.

His business concepts are fairly simple and straight forward; find tasks that people don't like to do, like hauling junk and scooping poop, and making a business out of it. Make sure that your employees are courteous and clean and that your prices are fair. And he's making a go for it.

The junk is sorted and either recycled, donated to charities or at last resort taken to the landfill. Naparstek’s research shows that Wichita could probably sustain two more trucks and crews in the next few years. But that’s not big enough, so he has diversified his mini-empire with a new venture: Scooperjoes.

“Scooperjoes is a pet waste removal service, we scoop poop basically,” he said.

Again, simple jobs that only a paid professional would want to do. Naparstek has his eye on other communities in the region for both of these services. Eventually he would like to offer franchise opportunities.
