WICHITA, Kansas -- It was a morning wake up call Steven Powell never expected.
"I woke up my dad gave me a call that my window was broken so I kind of rushed out and came to this," said Steven Powell, car theft victim.
His car window had been busted out Tuesday night on Elizabeth Street in Wichita.
"Glass all over my car seat. My GPS is gone. They took a notebook and some sunglasses which is weird, but yeah it sucked."
Powell is not alone.
He is one of at least a dozen victims targeted across the city in one night.
A couple living on the west side of town had the soft top on their jeep slashed right in their front yard.
A lighter, some ibuprofen, and a GPS were among the items taken.
"I just don't think whoever is doing it knows how much they are affecting people. I mean by stealing my GPS. I lost way more just in the window than the GPS."
Wichita police blame the summer months for the sudden spike in car break-ins and are reminding people like Powell to keep their cars empty of valuables whether your doors are locked are not.
"I'm going to be a little more careful. I already try to keep things out of there like bank statements stuff, but now I'm going to be sure to keep everything of value out of there and out of sight at least."
Police suggest keeping your belonging in your trunk and out of sight because it only takes a minute for some to break in and get away.
