WOLFE COUNTY, Kentucky (WLEX) - Lightning struck too close for comfort in Wolfe County Wednesday.
After initially striking a tree, the bolt ricocheted in several directions and in one of the paths was a school bus with several children onboard.
They were just a few stops away from home when some students in Wolfe County suddenly saw reddish-purple lights and heard an explosion. A lightning strike just inches away from them hit a tree.
"It sounded like dynamite going off right next to your ear," said Lucas Morris.
"It was a loud boom you could see the lightning and then you can see the glass fly to the other side of the bus," said Wolfe County Director of transportation John Halsey said.
Morris says it was one of the scariest moments he's ever experienced watching the bolt hit a tree and then come after him.
"After the lightning struck, we could smell the smoke coming from the tree," Morris said.
Luckily, the tree and bus were the only things damaged. A school nurse was sent to the scene, but other than being shaken up a bit, everyone was just fine.
"With a situation like this, our chances of this happening again is slim probably," Halsey said.
The damage to the bus has been repaired and back up and running again. as for the kids, they say they hope to never experience anything like this again.
